Autumn Spring
DesignTide Tokyo, November 2009

Concept: Nick Charnley

With support from DesignSingapore Council

The existing light track system in the store was used to hang 17 Hanami as individual pendant lights. This was in contrast to previous occasions when the work as been hung as a cluster in the shape of a chandelier.

A selection of low power incandescent bulbs were sourced from the reknowned and fabulous DIY and accessories store Tokyo Hands in Shibuya. The bulbs were chosen on the basis of aesthetic appeal and interesting qualities.

The shop window display at Omotesando Hills was intended to serve as an advertisement for the main exhibition. The display consisted of cascading plastic fan skeletons, some electrical components and a tree silouette on the front window.

Omotesando Hills is an exclusive shopping complex in Aoyama designed by Tadao Ando. It was completed in 2005.

On one level the title of the installation referred simply to the idea of spring elements occurring in autumn i.e. hanami (cherry blossom viewing) being a spring activity. It also intentionally referenced works by Japanese artists as Yasujiro Ozu and Yasunari Kawabata. Read the full text explaining the work by downloading the PDF document below.
